Sound design breakdown
Brink This piece of sound design was created in about 12 hours, all the foley, ambience, shell impacts, dialogue, body impacts and a few of the layers of debris were recorded by myself both in the field and in the studio. The weapon firing and explosion sounds are from soundsnap.com but have been edited and processed. The drones and tones were created in Kontakt and Reaktor using a combination of my own patches and Native Instruments bundled instruments.
Trex Roar The Trex vocal is made up of several animals, the grunts and hisses at the start of the clip are made from elephant and alligator samples. The roar is made from an initial pitched and layered roar from an elephant, tiger and lion cross faded into some elephant and lion growls. To give these more bass I also layered in a plant pot being dragged under the animal sounds, this is heavily pitched down and eq’ed to remove any trace of the gritty sound. The roar also contains a pass by from a fighter jet, this isn’t really audible but when added enhances the initial power of the roar.
Creature Ambience This piece of sound design was created for Lukewarm Media’s Primal Carnage tech demo being displayed at GDC San Francisco 2010. My role in this video was to mix and implement the sound design and music. (The full version containing music is available here, I think the music is a little loud which is why it isn’t included in my reel). The vocalizations for the stegosauruses and the ambience were provided by my fellow sound designer David Yingling. All other sound design is my own.
Lukewarm Media Web Intro This piece of sound design was put together in about an hour and a half. I had not seen the video beforehand and had no time to go field recording so only about half the sounds used are my own. The other half was obtained from libraries and soundsnap.com and were quickly edited and processed. The breathing was done with my own breath straight to the video.
Fight Night Characterization The Silly Characterization clip has been done in a cartoon style using classic slapstick sounds and impacts. The impacts don’t provide any realism to the clip however because the sounds are attached to events in the clip the juxtaposition of the sound makes the clip humorous. The impacts comprise of metal clangs broken wood, comedy kisses and musical instruments. Several of the impact sounds also have a lead in sound such as an airplane or a tin whistle this gives the feeling that the two fighters are messing about. When the character is knocked out a low pass filter is slowly applied giving the viewer the character’s point of view. During this there is the sound of glass splintering and cracking highlighting the character’s physical state, then when the character finally hits the canvas the glass shatters. The Foley used for the character’s footsteps and clothes is quite light and airy reinforcing the feeling that the characters aren’t being harmed. The ambience of his clip is also based on two crowds mixed together however the crowds used in this clip are laughing and joking creating the feeling that the boxers aren’t in a serious competition.
The Saboteur This short clip taken from The Saboteur was created in about six hours including the recording time about three quarters of the sounds in the clip are my own. The rain, thunder and fire at the start of the clip are library samples and the rest of the sounds are my own.
